stag beetles
Background to Family

A family of wood-decay beetles with few representatives in Great Britain, but containing the well known stag beetle, Lucanus cervus. This is the largest native beetle. Lucanids feed as larvae, in microhabitats that vary according to species, in the heartwood of broadleaved trees (pine, Pinus, is recorded), and also in stumps and timber. Development normally occurs over several years. Adult L. cervus feed on fruit and sap.
