Family

Curculionidae
Sub Family

Description

weevils
Background to Family

Globally, the Curculionidae is the largest insect family, and indeed, the largest family of the entire animal kingdom. In Britain there are more than 400 species, which display an enormous breadth of plant relationships. Weevils are well known for their elongated heads that form a 'snout' or 'beak' (rostrum). This enables adults to bore into plant tissues; in particular, females use their rostrum to help place eggs in the correct location. Further details are under sub-family headings.
