tortoise beetles; a sub-family of the Chrysomelidae

Generally hemi-spherical, green beetles that are able to retract their appendages beneath the flanged pronotum and elytra. They are external leaf feeders, as camouflaged larvae and adults, on a range of herbaceous dicots (especially Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, Chenopodiaceae). Of the 14 species, many are scarce.
