Family

Rhynchitidae
Sub Family

Description

a family of orthocerous weevils
Background to Family

The Rhynchitidae includes predominantly arboreal weevils, usually occurring on specific deciduous, woody hosts. As found in some species of the Attelabidae, the females of Byctiscus and Deporaus display a behaviour, unique in the British fauna, of rolling-up tree leaves to produce ‘cradles’ for the developing larvae. Many species develop as larvae in buds, petioles and twigs, and include some minor pests of fruit. Others are found on perennial herbs.

Orthocerous weevils. Coleoptera: Curculionoidea (Nemonychidae, Anthribidae, Urodontidae, Attelabidae and Apionidae)).; In some classifications, the Rhynchitidae is treated as a sub-family of the Attelabidae (e.g. Morris 1990).;
