Background to Family
 
Two sub-families, of which the Rhizophaginae (13 species) mainly occur under the bark of dead or dying coniferous and broadleaved trees. Rhizophagus grandis was introduced as a biocontrol agent for the alien timber pest, Dendroctonus micans (Scolytidae). The Monotominae (9 species) are asociated with decaying vegetation or with ants nests (Formica).
