0197 Lep Ypo, Plutella xylostella, Diamondback Moth
© Roger Key
Family

Yponomeutidae
Sub Family

Description

a family of 'micro-moths'
Background to Family

More than 70, relatively host-specific species, belonging to 7 sub-families. The Scythropiinae and Yponomeutinae ('small ermines') mainly feed within communal webs on broadleaved trees and shrubs, where some are defoliators. Other species occur on pines (Pinus) or herbaceous plants. The two members of the Praydinae mine leaves or bark on birch (Betula) or ash (Fraxinus excelsior). Most of the Argyresthiinae feed internally in the shoots, flower-heads or fruit of broadleaved and coniferous trees and shrubs (especially Juniperus). Larvae of the Ypsolophinae and Plutellinae occur singly, in frail retreats, on, respectively, broadleaved trees and shrubs and Cruciferae. The Acrolepiinae mainly feed as leaf-miners on Asteraceae, Liliaceae, or Solanaceae.
