Family

Tineidae
Sub Family

Description

a family of 'micro-moths'
Background to Family

About 45 resident and accidentally introduced species in Britain and Ireland. Most species feed on fungi, lichens and dead animal and plant matter. Consequently, many species are associated with human habitation or are cosmopolitan pests of stored products. Two exceptional species (Psychoides) feed on ferns (Pteridophyta), where they feed on sporangia. Some patterns in diet are apparent between sub-families: Nemapopoginae are associated with bracket fungi on decaying wood, whereas Tineinae tend to feed on dead animals or their refuse- bird's nests being a typical habitat. Myrmecozela ochraceella is associated with the nests of certain wood-ants (Formica, Hymenoptera).

Notes

Data currently unassessed by a specialist for changes in nomenclature, new species to the British list, new interactions, errors in original sources, and misspellings. New material added from Emmet, A.M., Ed. (1992) The moths and butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland, Vol. 7, Part 2. Harley Books, Colchester.; The Tineidae now incorporates the Hieroxestidae as a sub-family.;
