Family

Scythrididae
Sub Family

Description

a family of 'micro-moths'
Background to Family

All the British species occur in the genus Scythris. Larvae feed from a silken web or gallery on, or close to, the host plant. They mine, or feed on the exposed surfaces of, leaves, sometimes gregariously. While the genus uses a diverse range of herbaceous plants or shrubs, most species specialise on a particular host, particulalry rock-roses (Helianthemum). A few species feed on a range of hosts within their habitat.
