Family

Pterophoridae
Sub Family

Description

a family of 'micro-moths'
Background to Family

More than 40 species of 'plume' moths, named after the feathery appearance of the fore- and hind-wings. The larvae mostly feed on the foliage, stems or flower-heads of a disparate array of herbaceous, dicot plants. Some genera specialise on particular hosts, e.g. Agdistis on sea lavenders (Limonium), and Oxyptilus, Platyptilia and Leioptilus on Asteraceae. The two species of Amblyptilia feed on the flowers and unripe seeds of a much broader range of host families.
