Description

a family of 'micro-moths'
Background to Family

So-called 'bagworms', after the portable silk case that is camouflaged by dry fragments of plant matter, sand or dead insects. The life-history is centered in or around the case: pupation, mating and egg-laying occur here, and females are wingless or parthenogenetic. Larvae feed predominantly on lichens or grasses, but they may include a variety of dead animal or plant matter in the diet. Sterrhopterix fusca is atypical in feeding on a range of broadleaved trees, grasses and heather.
