Family

Nepticulidae
Sub Family

Description

a family of 'micro-moths'
Background to Family

A large family of minute moths, containing around 100 species. The vast majority mine leaves; a few mine tender bark or bore into buds or seeds, e.g. Etainia on maples (Acer). Hosts include a wide range of broadleaved trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants, although individual species tend to be monophagous. The main families used are Rosaceae, followed by Fagaceae (especially oaks, Quercus), Salicaceae, Betulaceae and Fabaceae. Ectoedemia contains nearly 20 species, and there are more than 70 species in the largest genus, Stigmella. Patterns in host use tend to occur at the sub-generic level.
