Family

Micropterigidae
Sub Family

Description

a family of 'micro-moths'
Background to Family

Five species of tiny, primitive moths (Micropterix), with functional mandibles as adults. Larval hosts are uncertain- some species have been reared on the shoots of herbaceous plants- and possible diets include leaf litter and fungal hyphae. More unusually, the diurnal adults feed on pollen and display flower preferences, especially for sedges (Carex) and broadleaved trees.
