0221 Lep Gra, Phyllonorycter platani
© Ian Kimber
Family

Gracillariidae
Sub Family

Description

a family of 'micro-moths'
Background to Family

A large family, of tiny moths, containing around 90 species in Britain and Ireland. The Gracillariinae initially mine a leaf, and later feed in curled or folded leaves, predominantly on broadleaved trees and shrubs. They are specific to one or more host plant genera. The Lithocolletinae, comprising more than 50 species in the genus Phyllonorycter, spend their entire development in a mine, either in a leaf or green bark. Again, the main hosts are broadleaved trees and shrubs. The three species of Phyllocnistinae (Phyllocnistis) specialise as miners on Populus or Salix, where they are sap-feeders in the leaf epidermis.
