Description

stick insects
Background to Family

Three non-native species from New Zealand, introduced on ornamental plants into gardens and nurseries, are naturalised: the prickly (Acanthoxyla geisovii Kaup, formerly identified as A. prasina Westwood), unarmed (A. inermis Salmon) and smooth (Clitarchus hookeri White) stick insects. They feed on a wide variety of hosts, including dicot herbs and shrubs (especially Rosaceae), conifers and ferns (source: Marshall & Haes 1988, Grasshoppers and Allied Insects of Great Britain and Ireland. Harley Books, Colchester).
