Home of the Database of Insects and their Food Plants © Ian Kimber Family   Coleophoridae Sub Family   Description   a family of 'micro-moths' Background to Family   A family with over 100 species in Britain and Ireland, mainly occurring in the genus Coleophora. The larvae of virtually all species construct a distinctive and portable case from silk, frequently incorporating plant material. The exception, Augasma aeratella, induces a gall in a floret of knotgrass (Polygomun arviculare). Generally, species either lay eggs on leaves or seeds, but larvae may switch to other host parts between autumn and spring- including flowers. Hosts are drawn from 24 plant families, they range from dicot herbs, shrubs and trees to grasses and rushes.
