Family

Batrachedridae
Sub Family

Description

a family of 'micro-moths'
Background to Family

Three species with diverse life histories. The larvae of Batrachedra praeangusta bore into the catkins, and sometimes buds, of Salix and Populus; B. pinicolella mines the needles of Picea abies, and possibly P. sylvestris. Both species later feed externally from within a silken retreat. B. parvulipunctella, in contrast, feeds from a silken case on the waxy secretions of scale insects (Homoptera: Aclerdidae) on reeds (Poaceae).
