0256 Lep Tha, Thaumetopoea pityocampa, pine processionary
© Ian Kimber
Family

Thaumetopoeidae
Sub Family

Description

processionary moths
Background to Family

None of the 5 European species is resident in Britain, although the oak processionary, Thaumetopoea processionea, has bred in London. This species, and the related pine processioanry, T. pityocampa, are forest pests- defoliating oaks and pines, respectively. The caterpillars are gregarious, emerging from a silken web at night and commuting in a 'column' to feed in the canopy. The caterpillars have irritant hairs that harm human health.
