hawkmoths
Background to Family

Impressive moths, including residents and breeding migrants. The Sphinginae feed externally on the foliage of herbs, shrubs, and broadleaved and coniferous hosts within particular families. The Smerinthinae feed on broadleaved trees, and the Macroglossinae on numerous dicot herbs- often willowherbs (Onagraceae) and bedstraws (Rubiaceae). Some adults feed on nectar at long-tubed flowers.
