0254 Lep Ses, Sesia bembeciformis, lunar hornet moth
© Ian Kimber
Family

Sesiidae
Sub Family

Description

clearwing moths
Background to Family

The brightly coloured adults mimic wasps, but they are rarely seen. The family exploits a wide range of broadleaved hosts, especially willows and poplars (Salicaceae). Individual species are often specific to a single host plant, or to several congeners. Larvae bore the stems and trunks of shrubs and trees, beneath the bark of fresh stumps, or the roots of herbaceous plants. Development usually requires two years.
