Background to Family
The emperor moth, Saturnia pavonia, is the sole resident species. Eggs are laid in batches on food plants, and the caterpillars are gregarious at first. The caterpillars develop on a wide range of broadleaved shrubs and trees during the summer months, with host choice depending on the type of habitat. The adults do not feed.
