0242 Lep Noct, Paracolax tristalis, clay fan foot
© Ian Kimber
Family

Noctuidae
Sub Family

Herminiinae
Description

a sub-family of the Noctuidae
Background to Family

The host choices of the 'fan-foots' are uncertain for some species. Pechipogo, Zanclognatha, and Herminia are all associated with the withered or fallen leaves of various broadleaved trees or bramble, in situations with plenty of vegetation cover. Macrochilo lives in the stems of wood-sedge (Carex sylvatica) and wood-rushes (Luzula), where it also feeds on the leaves.
