Home of the Database of Insects and their Food Plants © Roger Key Family   Gelechiidae Sub Family   Description   a family of 'micro-moths' Background to Family   A large family of more than 180 taxa in Britain and Ireland, divided between six sub-families. Larvae feed on more than 35 plant families, spanning the range of potential host plants: lichens, mosses, ferns, and all growth forms among monocot and dicot plants. Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Caryophyllaceae and Roasaceae are the most used families. The majority of species feed on a single host genus or family, and numerous genera are specialised on certain host taxa, e.g. Bryotropha on mosses and occasionally grasses. The Gelechiidae exploit all plant parts, although individual species are specific in their mode of feeding. Feeding is concealed, either in a mine or a spinning between leaves.
