a sub-family of the Noctuidae
Background to Family
 
Several dozen resident and migrant species, whose wings often bear metallic marks. Numerous species are polyphagous on herbaceous plants, although nettle (Urtica) features in the diet of many. Host choice may be dictated by habitat; some species specialise on Ericaceae, Ranunculaceae, or grasses and sedges.
