Their grey adults contrast strongly with the variable and striking caterpillars, which include aposematic mimics. The sallows (Xanthia) have autumn-flying adults; the young caterpillars typically feed on the catkins or other flowering parts of tree hosts, and later on herbaceous plants. Similarly, the chestnuts (Conistra, Agrochola) display dietary shifts during development.
