0182 Lep Noct, Mullein larva
© Roger Key
Family

Noctuidae
Sub Family

Cuculliinae
Description

a sub-family of the Noctuidae
Background to Family

Foliage, flower or seed feeders on a wide range of herbaceous plants, grasses, and broadleaved shrubs and trees. Host choice is frequently dictated by habitat type. Species in Cucullia and Shargacucullia tend to be mono- or oligophagous on hosts in the Asteraceae and Scrophulaceae, respectively. Lithophane feed on broadleaved trees, although Blair's shoulder knot, L. leautieri specialises on conifers.
