Family

Lymantriidae
Sub Family

Description

tussock moths
Background to Family

Named after the caterpillars' compact 'hair-pencils', tussocks are frequently polyphagous on broadleaved shrubs and trees, although they may show host preferences. More rarely, species are confined to certain hosts, and the choice may depend on the habitat occupied. One of the Holarctic's pernicious forest pests, the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar), has bred in south-east England. The brown-tail, Euproctis chrysorrhoea, has irritant hairs that harm human health.
