Description

eggar moths
Background to Family

Heavily built, medium to large moths that occur on a very wide range of dicot herbs, shrubs and trees, as well as grasses. The hairy caterpillars of the individual species are typically polyphagous, and host choice often varies according to location or the type of habitat. The caterpillars of the small eggar, Eriogaster lanestris, form a silken web and feed gregariously.
