The three British species bore either in the roots and stems of reed (Phragmataecia castaneae), or in the stems, branches and trunks of deciduous shrubs and trees (Zeuzera pyrina, Cossus cossus). Zeuzera pyrina can cause economic damage to fruit trees, while Cossus cossus is associated especially with trees prone to winter flooding. The adults do not feed.
