Family

Satyridae
Sub Family

Description

the 'browns'
Background to Family

Sixteen species that are as homogeneous in their foodplant choices as they are in their colouration: all feed on monocotyledons, with most members consuming a range of either fine or coarse grasses (Poacaeae). The only exception is the large heath, Coenonympha tullia, which mainly feeds on cottongrasses (Eriophorum, Cyperaceae). Caterpillars typically feed in exposed positions on grass stems at night, or in more concealed locations during the day.

Notes

Old data currently unassessed by a specialist for changes in nomenclature, errors in original sources, and misspellings. Most recent update from Asher et al (2001). The Millenium Atlas of Butterflies in Britain and Ireland, OUP.; Note: in some classifications, the Satyridae is included as a sub-family (Satyrinae) in the Nymphalidae; the ‘browns’ tend to be treated as a family in Great Britain.;
