Family

Pieridae
Sub Family

Description

the 'whites' and 'yellows'
Background to Family

The British and Irish representatives of each sub-family tend to occur on particular hostplant families: the wood whites, Leptidea (Dismorphinae) and ‘yellows’, Colias (Coliadinae) on leguminous herbs (Fabaceae); the brimstone, Gonepteryx (Coliadinae) on Rhamnaceae; and the Pierinae (Pieris, Anthocharis) mainly on herbaceous crucifers (Brassicaceae). The large and small whites, Pieris brassicae and P. rapae, are pests of cultivated plants.
