Papilionidae
Sub Family

Description

the 'swallowtails'
Background to Family

The single species resident in Britain, Papilio machaon, is represented by an endemic race, britannicus, which develops solely on milk-parsley (Peucedanum palustre, Apiaceae). Consequently, the butterfly is restricted to open fens and marshes, and occurs only in East Anglia. Caterpillars pupate on vegetation away from the host plant. In contrast, the continental European race, gorganus, will breed on a range of umbellifers (Apiaceae). It has established temporary populations, in southern England, in three periods during the last 150 years.
