0172 Lep Nym, Comma caterpillar

Family

Nymphalidae
Sub Family

Description

includes the 'fritillaries' and Monarch butterfly
Background to Family

A family of often striking and popular insects, which includes residents, breeding migrants, and a vagrant (the Monarch, Danaus plexippus, which was in the former family Danaidae). Numerous species in the Apaturinae use common nettle, Urtica dioica, and its relatives as foodplants, whereas the fritillaries (Argynninae) mainly feed on violets, Viola spp. Some caterpillars feed gregariously and form a silken web or tent (Aglais, Inachis, Euphydryas, Melitaea), while others may conceal themselves, at particular points in their development, by tying leaves (Limenitis, Vanessa).

Notes

Old data currently unassessed by a specialist for changes in nomenclature, errors in original sources, and misspellings. Most recent update from Asher et al (2001). The Millenium Atlas of Butterflies in Britain and Ireland, OUP.; Note: in some classifications, the Nymphalidae also includes the ‘browns’ as a sub-family (Satyrinae), although they tend to be treated at family level in Great Britain.;
