Background to Family

The majority of these small, stocky butterflies specialise on a single, or a few, grass species (Poaceae); others are found on a limited range of trefoils and vetches (Fabaceae) or of Rosaceae. The caterpillars frequently create a retreat on the foodplant, from which they emerge to feed, by binding together the foliage or leaf blades with silk. Grass-feeders may bite distinctive notches in the leaf blade below their retreat.
