Background to Family

Small sawflies that occur as larvae, often together, on the developing male cones of pines (Pinus). Infested cones may be distorted or shed their pollen prematurely. Notes

Data currently unassessed by a specialist for changes in nomenclature, new species to the British list, new interactions, errors in original sources, and misspellings. Comment by Guy Knight, after brief inspection of data for Symphyta, Feb 2007: 'at least two-thirds of the species [need] some editing to the nomenclature or plant associations...there have been many taxonomic changes and additions to the fauna since the 1978 checklist'.; ;
