Sub Family

Description

a family of sawflies
Background to Family

Three, relatively large, wood-boring species indigenous to Britain (Xiphydria), using broadleaved trees in the Salicaceae, Betulaceae, Ulmaceae and Aceraceae. As in the Siricidae, larval development depends on the presence of a symbiotic fungus. In contrast to the Siricidae, the life-cycle is generally completed in one year.

Notes

Data currently unassessed by a specialist for changes in nomenclature, new species to the British list, new interactions, errors in original sources, and misspellings. Comment by Guy Knight, after brief inspection of data for Symphyta, Feb 2007: 'at least two-thirds of the species [need] some editing to the nomenclature or plant associations...there have been many taxonomic changes and additions to the fauna since the 1978 checklist'.; ;
