Siricidae
Sub Family

Description

wood-wasps
Background to Family

A family containing some of the most spectacular British insects. The Siricinae and Tremicinae have wood-boring larvae that feed on the standing or cut timber of conifers (Pinaceae) and angiosperms, respectively. Individual species develop on a range of tree genera, completing the life- cycle in 2 to 4 years (or longer in drying timber). The females of the Siricinae, bar Xeris spectrum, introduce spores of the fungus Amylostereum areolatum from abdominal sacs when they oviposite in the host tree. Their larvae are believed to feed on the resulting fungal mycelium. Species recorded in Britain include presumed natives and aliens introduced with timber, some of which have established.

Notes

Data currently unassessed by a specialist for changes in nomenclature, new species to the British list, new interactions, errors in original sources, and misspellings. Comment by Guy Knight, after brief inspection of data for Symphyta, Feb 2007: 'at least two-thirds of the species [need] some editing to the nomenclature or plant associations...there have been many taxonomic changes and additions to the fauna since the 1978 checklist'.; ;
