Family

Orussidae
Sub Family

Description

parasitic wood wasps
Background to Family

There is slight uncertainty about the life histories of the Orussidae. The consensus is that they are parasitoids, whose larvae feed internally on the immature stages of wood-boring beetles (Buprestidae) and sawflies (Siricidae). Thus the orussids are unique among sawflies in having carnivorous larvae. However, the sole species listed in Britain, Orussus abietinus, was recorded on only a few occasions before 1900.

Notes

Data currently unassessed by a specialist for changes in nomenclature, new species to the British list, new interactions, errors in original sources, and misspellings. Comment by Guy Knight, after brief inspection of data for Symphyta, Feb 2007: 'at least two-thirds of the species [need] some editing to the nomenclature or plant associations...there have been many taxonomic changes and additions to the fauna since the 1978 checklist'.; ;
