0143 Hym Dip, Diprion pini larva
© Roger Key
Family

Diprionidae
Sub Family

Description

a family of sawflies
Background to Family

The larvae of most members of the family feed exposed on the needles of coniferous trees and shrubs. The larvae are initially gregarious, but spread out to complete feeding, and then drop to the ground where they spin a cocoon. Individual species may feed on several genera (but mainly pine, Pinus, or spruce, Picea; not larch, Larix), although Monoctenus juniperi is restricted to Juniperus communis. The adults are stoutly built and fly slowly. Numerous species, some accidentally introduced, have been pests of forestry trees in Britain.

Notes

Data currently unassessed by a specialist for changes in nomenclature, new species to the British list, new interactions, errors in original sources, and misspellings. Comment by Guy Knight, after brief inspection of data for Symphyta, Feb 2007: 'at least two-thirds of the species [need] some editing to the nomenclature or plant associations...there have been many taxonomic changes and additions to the fauna since the 1978 checklist'.; ;
