Family

Aleyrodidae
Sub Family

Description

whiteflies
Background to Family

A mainly tropical family of piercing bugs, feeding mostly on angiosperms, especially woody ones. Adults are usually covered in wax, and females are frequently parthenogenetic. Of the juvenile stages, only the 1st instar is mobile; the penultimate and ultimate instars are termed prepupal and pupal, respectively. Species recorded in Britain include non-native, polyphagous pests found in glasshouses. However, many non-pest species also have broad host choices, across a range of families- including ferns.
