Phylloxeridae
Sub Family

Description

a family of aphids
Background to Family

Six species in a primitive aphid family, with only egg-laying females, which always occurs on dicots. Tree hosts for species recorded in Britain are Quercus, Populus and Salix. The American vine aphid, Viteus (Phylloxera) vitis, was the scurge of the European wine industry in the 19th century, before its ravages were circumvented by grafting European plants onto American root stocks.
