Description

a family of shieldbugs
Background to Family

A small number of rather rare and uncommon species, generally occurring at the edges of their ranges. The two species of Odontoscelis are typically associated with the warm microclimates of dunes and other sandy areas, where they burrow. Unusually for shield bugs, they overwinter as nymphs. Foodplants are storksbills (Erodium) for O.lineola, but remain unconfirmed for O.fuliginosa. Individual species of Eurygaster develop on either grasses (Poaceae), rushes (Juncaceae) or sedges (Cyperaceae), but show a degree of polyphagy and adults feed on a wider range of plants. The European tortoise bug, E.maura, can be a pest of cereals in continental Europe.
