Family

Piesmidae
Sub Family

Description

beet bugs
Background to Family

Two species occur in Great Britain, feeding on a range of goosefoots (Chenopodiaceae), including cultivated beets, in coastal and inland habitats. However, captive-reared Piesma quadratum can develop on other hosts. The sub-species P. quadratum spergulariae is endemic to the Isles of Scilly, where the host plant is rock sea-spurrey, Spergularia rupicola. In continental Europe, P. quadratum is a vector of beet (Beta vulgaris) viruses.
