Description

a family of shieldbugs
Background to Family

The largest family of shieldbugs, containing both partially and entirely predatory species. Phytophagous members typically feed on the developing seeds or fruits of their hosts, although the life-histories of some species are unconfirmed. Hosts range from single species to numerous plants within certain families; conifers, broadleaved trees and shrubs, herbs and grasses are used. The cosmopolitan pest, the green shield bug (Nezara viridula), is polyphagous on ornamental and crop plants, and has recently established in Great Britain.
