Cydnidae
Sub Family

Description

a family of shieldbugs
Background to Family

Small to medium-sized, rather oval shieldbugs. They are generally dark in colour, are adapted to living on the ground, and tend to require habitats with hot climates (e.g. sand dunes, free-draining soils). The foodplants of the Cydninae and Corimelaeninae are unconfirmed. The Sehirinae are associated with bedstraws (Legnotus on Galium) or particular families of herbaceous dicots (Sehirus on Lamiaceae, Boraginaceae, Santalaceae). Sehirus adults overwinter in the ground, and females also lay their eggs in hollows in the soil. Following mass movements in the spring, some Sehirus species may be found on vegetation away from the host plant.
