A speciose family of small hoppers, whose species often occur as both short- and fully-winged individuals. In contrast to the Cicadellidae, plant hoppers feed mostly on grasses (Poacaeae), sedges (Cyperaceae) and rushes (Juncaceae), with exceptions on moss and ferns.

Data currently unassessed by a specialist for changes in nomenclature, new species to the British list, new interactions, errors in original sources, and misspellings. Following a brief inspection in 2007, Alan Stewart judged that the data for the Auchenorrhyncha were very out-of-date, because a large body of knowledge has accrued since the last update.; ;
