Background to Family

The only representative in Great Britain is the New Forest Cicada. This rare and legally protected species feeds as a subterranean nymph on the zylem of its host's roots. Nymphs moult five times and complete development in 6-10 years! Only European host records, for adults, are currently held in the database. They relate to the polyphagous adults feeding on broadleaved trees, shrubs and bracken (Pteridium aquilinum). British females are known to lay eggs in the stems or twigs of such species (Pinchen BJ & Ward LK (2002) British Wildlife 13 (4): 258-266).
