Family

Cercopidae
Sub Family

Description

spittlebugs or froghoppers
Background to Family

A small number of rather polyphagous species, named after the nymphs that feed within a froth of plant sap ('cuckoo-spit'), and after the adult's prodigious jumping ability. Some species have bright red and black adults. In Great Britain, spittlebugs either feed on a range of dicot herbs and broadleaved shrubs and trees, or on grasses, sedges and rushes. They feed on leaves, stems or roots. The highly polyphagous Philanaeus spumarius accounts for nearly half the records.

Notes

Data currently unassessed by a specialist for changes in nomenclature, new species to the British list, new interactions, errors in original sources, and misspellings. Following a brief inspection in 2007, Alan Stewart judged that the data for the Auchenorrhyncha were very out-of-date, because a large body of knowledge has accrued since the last update.; ;
