Description

hoverflies
Background to Family

The adults of these flies are often striking, but harmless, mimics of bees and wasps. They feed on pollen and nectar, as well as honeydew. The larvae have diverse plant and fungal associations: as herbivores in the bulbs, stems or rootstocks of monocot and dicot perennial herbs; as mycophages in fungal fruiting bodies; as saprophages associated with decay in trees, and as predators of other insect herbivores. A few species are economic pests of bulbs.

Notes

Old data currently unassessed by a specialist for changes in nomenclature, errors in original sources, and misspellings. New material added from Stubbs & Falk, 2002 (British Hoverflies, 2nd edn. British Entomological and Natural History Society).; The database contains close plant interactions for non-phytophagous species; typically these are aphid predators, or saprophages associated with trees.;
