Home of the Database of Insects and their Food Plants © Roger Key Family   Chloropidae Sub Family   Description   gout flies Background to Family   A family of small, dark flies, occurring in two sub-families: the Oscinellinae and Chloropinae. Most species are phytophagous. The principal hosts are monocot herbs, especially grasses (Poaceae), but also members of the Cyperaceae. Numerous species feed in the cones of conifers (Pinaceae), but relatively few on dicot herbs. Larvae mainly feed in stems or seeds, and some induce galls. A minority of species are inquilines in such galls (e.g. Cryptonevra in the galls of Lipara on reed, Phragmites); while one species (Thaumatomyia notata) is recorded as predatory on aphids.
