Around 150 species - of which some are phytophagous- typically associated with aquatic, coastal and saline habitats. Among the herbivores, individual species tend to mine the leaves of a range of monocot and dicot aquatic plants, e.g. pondweeds (Potamogeton), duckweeds (Lemna), sedges (Carex), grasses (Glyceria) and rushes (Juncus).
